Can I get past K9 web protection on a Mac?

Rachel asks:

I have my own computer, but my parents installed K9 web protection on it so that I can only do homework. I can’t get to proxies or installed proxy software downloads. Does anyone know how to get past this?

Yes. we do know how to get past it- however, your situation presents a moral dilemma. You should talk with your parents on “unlocking” the web during certain times, or perhaps as a reward for doing well in school. They will agree to this, if you tell them they can lock it again, if they see your grades drop.

Rachel, you need administrator access to the computer in order to this. If you dont, insert the osx install cd and reset the admin password from there, but obviously they will know if their password doesnt work anymore.

If you do have admin access, follow these steps:

1. Open up terminal. Look it up in spotlight
2. Type this into terminal:
defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
3. Press Enter.
4. Restart Computer.
5. Log back in and go to Macintosh HD on your desktop.
6. Look for a folder called “opt”. (without quotations)
7. Open that up
8. Delete the folder inside called “.bluecoat”
9. Empty Trash

Done! No moral dillemma here, if you ask me.
