I want to install a persistent coy of Ubuntu 9.10 on a thumb drive, but checking on the net I am inundated by all the commands and different methods.

Can anyone tell me what to do step by step with no tech jargon?

Okay, the easiest way without any jargon is to get hold of a computer that is running Ubuntu, There in you will find an option to create USB startup disk under System > Administration > Create Startup Disk , It is a GUI tool and give you will be able to boot off the USB stick, create and save documents that can be accessed iin the next session as well

    Try one of those programs:
    http://www.linuxliveusb.com/
    http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/
Both open source and easy to use. I personally use unetbootin, but Lili have nice features to.
