The direct update for Google Maps on my Android phone fails, so is there workaround for updating Google Maps? It cannot be uninstalled and then updated, so how am I going to update it?

i think you could google the googlemaps.apk file and install it make sure you type in your os version for example “googlemaps.apk #.#.#” the # is where you put your os version ex 2.3.3

Did you try manually uninstalling updates to the Google Maps App from the Settings screen and see if the update works ?
You can go to Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Google Maps> Then click on “Uninstall Updates”

Hello Sunil! I suggest trying a remote installation. When direct, from-your-device, updating fails, sometimes updating from your desktop using the play store link will work.

Another potential fix is to go to settings -> applications -> manage applications -> select the “all” tab, from the top of the scren.

Once here, go Google Play Services, Google Framework Services and Maps and wipe their caches. There are other programs that are involved in downloading maps, but these are probably the most important.

Try wiping out the Caches of the Maps application(s) as suggested by Kannon Y above.
