Lightworks is better and has free version too(only for non-commercial purpose).

What are you looking for? Something simple to edit your family documentations? Windows Movie Maker is free and up to the job. Get one without the word 'Live' (version 2.6 and below) and you can even install custom scripts to spice up your movie.
If you're interested in Adobe AfterEffects, try Sony Vegas.
If you want advanced software with everything you might need to produce something serious, Lightroom is free and powerful.

It depends what you are looking for. For a basic decent editor, you can use the free Windows Live Movie Maker (sometimes called just "Movie Maker"), or NCH's VideoPad. Even Adobe Premiere Elements is not all that expensive (less than $100, and about half that if you buy in in a bundle with Photoshop Elements).

The best free video editing software: Lightworks. This is designed by & for professionals, so it does have a steep learning curve, but if you want something that Hollywood studios use, this is it.

Sony Vegas Movie Studio 11 starts at around $45 USD. It may not be the newest, but it should still work out nicely. http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/moviestudio There are many other decent video editors in this price range, most with free trials so I would try them out before buying. This should give you more options with links to where you can purchase the software cheaper, though you may find better pricing through Amazon or Google searching. You should find some of them around $50, though searching may result in cheaper prices. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2397215,00.asp Found Magix Movie Edit Pro 2013 at Best Buy website for $30, but here is the official link to see what it is like: http://www.magix.com/us/movie-edit-pro/detail/tutorials/

It all depends on what all you are looking to do with the videos for which software would best fit your budget and options. Search your local site websites for cheap editors and search for reviews and tutorials. It is better to know what you are purchasing and getting yourself into than it is to just go by what others recommend.

Not sure if you are U.S.based, but for a limited time Newegg.com has Sony Vegas Movie Studio 11 Platinum Edition for $28 through their"Flash Sale". You have to sign up and make an account with Newegg, but $28 is a very good deal for a video editor like this. http://www.neweggflash.com/?url=%2FProduct%2FN82E16832135304 near the bottom on the left.
