Why does my iPhone give me an “error 1602″ when I try to restore it?

F asks:

My iPhone doesn’t work. The only way I know to restore it is through DFU mode. I want to be able to keep my contacts and photos and I’m not sure if that will let me. Also, if I do try to restore via DFU it gives me error 1602. How can I fix my iPhone?

You have to select to restore your phone from a previous device backup after the firmware has been restored. If you select to setup as a new iPhone both contacts and photos will be gone.

The error is covered in the following support article and is usually caused by trying to restore a corrupt or custom firmware, occasionally some software/driver problem.

well i don’t have a backup for it and i don’t know how to install specific firmware …

the way i did it is like this: i hold the sleep and home bottoms together for 10 sec the i release the sleep bottom and continue holding the home bottom for 15 sec then i will have a black screen in my iphone ( nothing changed) but the itunes recognize my iphone and tell me to restore it as that is the only option .. when itunes tries to restore my iphone the process stop and the error appears…

help me plz

Mike

You can try running a tool like iExplorer and then press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home button for 10 seconds to have your iPhone restarted.

If you are lucky the tool might be able to access data on the phone although it doesn’t boot up.

However, since you have already tried to restore and it failed it is likely that all data from the iPhone is gone.

As for restoring the firmware follow the linked article about completely reinstalling iTunes. Then try to restore normally, in DFU mode, using a different USB port, using a different docking cable.

If none of this works it would be good to know what happened in the first place that your iPhone stopped working forcing you to do a restore.

True, as the iPhone is already in recovery mode all data most likely are gone.

As to the 1602 error: In most cases it is caused by security software (antivirus, additional firewalls – the Windows firewall usually doesn’t interfere much) which block the access to the servers required in the restore process. Just disable that software for the time the restore takes. Also make shure no other USB devices (except for KB + mouse) are connected to the computer

Try updating iTunes to latest version -

http://www.apple.com/itunes/

You can use iREB tool to solve this -

http://www.jailbreaknation.com/how-to-fix-itunes-errors-1600-1601-1602-1603-1604-1015-1013-3002

If these two solutions doesn’t work then follow the instructions remaining in the link below -

well i tried iReb and iFaith to solve the 1602 error but no luck
so i tried to restore my iphone to a custom firmware but then it gives me the 3194 error so i used tinyumbrella and it didn’t work so i doenloaded a host file and replaced it but the i got the error 1600 and sometime 1604 or 1601
after that i used both iReb and tinyumbrella still the same
so i tied iFaith and tinyumbrella and you know what happened … the same error (1600 . 1601 or 1604)

does any one knows how to solve the 16XX errors because i tied a lot of methods from google and youtube but no luck ..

This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:

Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it’s not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for the error.
When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.
