Why does my iPhone 3GS battery drain when I use any apps?

First of all I suggest to read through this article. 

Together with the logical conclusion that using an App will always drain more battery than having it in standby it should give you the basic idea why it may be draining rather fast.

To answer the question wether your battery is defective or dying I suggest to read through this article and make your own judgement whether it may be near it’s end of life ~ the basic understanding is that they more you use your phone they faster it will die.
