Why does my iMac chime?

David asks:

My iMac using AT&T U-verse ‘chimes’ every few minutes. I changed batteries in the mouse and keyboard-  no effect. I am new to Macs and I feel sure it is some little thing I didn’t do. Any ideas?

I’m not sure what you mean by “chime” but from your description my first guess would be that what you are hearing is the sound of Apple Mail when it’s done checking for new mails.

I believe the chime is letting you know you have a new mail message….
