How to record TV shows from HDTV to a Windows 8 laptop?

I recently learned that I can use Windows Media Center to record TV shows without having to use a DVR. I’m curious if there might be any trouble using this method if I use Windows 8 on my laptop when I have used a certain software to make it resemble Windows Vista (I can’t use Windows 8 when I am too accustomed to the former ways).

Also, how would I connect the HDTV with the laptop? Or do I have to connect the antenna to the laptop?

Can I use an HDMI cable for this?

You would need to purchase a TV tuner card in order to use the PVR (personal video recorder) function for TV content. Haupage is one of the highest recommended brands, but you can find some USB TV tuner cards for around $30 or so.

Once Media Center recognizes the TV tuner and the TV signal, it should update the TV listings in a convenient way. Using other themes or apps to change the feel and look of Windows 8 missy likely will not affect Media Center in any way.

Here is an article for Window 7 Media Center, but most of what it talks about should be the same or similar: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/pvr-windows-media-center/. This might help, as well: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/what-should-i-know-before-adding-tv-tuners-to-use-with-windows-media-center.
