How do I upgrade iPhone Library? And How do I migrate iPhone Library to a new iMac?

I just got a new iMac with iPhoto 11 version 9.4.3. After migrating my previous iPhoto Library from another older MacBook with iPhoto 08 version 7.1.5 through Time Machine to the new iMac, iPhoto 11 prompted me to to upgrade my older iPhoto Library. When I hit “Upgrade”, iPhoto 11 just quit on me.

I tried to go back to my old MacBook to upgrade iPhoto 08 to iPhoto 11 so that my upgraded iPhoto Library could be migrated to the new iMac through another run on Timemachine . This too failed, for my old MacBook runs on OSX 10.5.8, whilst iPhoto 11 apparently needs to run on higher OSX of 10.7 and above (my old MacBook has max OSX 10.5.8 and could not be upgraded further).

What can I do to:
1. Upgrade my iPhoto Library from iPhoto 08 version 7.1.5 to one that is compatible to iPhoto 11 version 9.4.3?
2. Migrate the upgraded iPhoto Library to the new iMac (Time Machine/external drive)?

Hold down ALT when opening and try the repair library option too, though I would make sure you have a backup before trying any of these ideas.

Update iPhoto '11 to 9.0.1 before upgrading library

If iPhoto unexpectedly quits during the update process, first confirm that you have installed the iPhoto 9.0.1 software update before attempting to upgrade your library again:
