I have a new iPad and have to connect to iTunes – can you tell me what I will need to do? Do I need an iTunes account?

Navigate to http://bit.ly/ZMYOwK to get to the page on Apple's website that provides an online easy-to-complete form that, once you have completed it, will provide you with an Apple ID. Fill it out and, voila!, you will have an Apple ID that you can use on any Mac or i-device. Just be sure to remember the email address and password that you created so that you will be able to enter them when you want to use your Apple ID. You will need to your Apple ID for access to the App Store and for a number of other services.
An Apple ID (which includes the "iTunes account") is needed to download free and paid apps, to access iCloud services (e.g. contacts, calendars and backups to the cloud). It is not necessarily needed to use your iPad.
Generally all you have to do is connect the iPad to the internet (e.g. WiFi) and follow the on-screen instructions. If you don't have WiFi you can connect it to a computer using the docking cable, install the latest iTunes and follow the instruction within iTunes.

A small dialog will open asking for apple id and password. Fill in your details and hit sign in.

You don't even need to connect the iPad to your computer to set it up. Just turn on the iPad and follow the screen's instructions. It'll even allow you to create a new Apple ID on the spot.

You can also take it to your nearby apple store and they'll set it up for you at no charge.
