Download winrar or 7zip, download the mod(it is a zip file). Go to appdata, roaming, .minecraft, open minecraft.jar or minecraft using winrar or zip. Put the mod in a folder. Put the mod inside minecraft.jar, dont worry about other stuff in there, winrar will merge it.
    U got a mod

Most Mods Need Modloader Download that and put it into your minecraft.jar file open that with winrar or 7 zip with the mod do the same but delete meta-inf and some mods will need to be put in your mods folder.

    Here's a guide.

Read slowly. Mods are mods - they aren't meant to be normal behavior, and aren't terribly easy to do either.

Here's what seems to be a good video on the topic:

After watching me install several (modloader and .jar versions) mods, my 11yr old son now installs his own mods! I only need to get involved when there is a conflict created.

So, not all that difficult after you've figured out what to do!
