How do I compress a video file made using Windows Live Movie Maker?

David Smith asks:

How do I compress a video file using Windows Live Movie Maker on Windows 7? I have a 700+MB video that I need to compress so that it is smaller – should I use Live Movie Maker or is there better software?

Thanks.

It can be done in WLMM but it is a hassle as you have to adjust video and audio settings to do it in most cases. There are several presets that you can use for specific devices, but overall, it does not give you an easy way to simple get a size reduction. For that purpose, I normally use Format Factory (www.formatoz.com).

Hi,
I recommend using handbrake.

HandBrake is an open-source, multithreaded video transcoder- it converts digital media from one format to another, compressing the files in the process. Handbrake can rip encrypted DVDs with libdvdcss (libdvdcss is installed with VLC media player on Mac OS X, or AnyDVD/DVD 43 on Windows).

Handbrake supports:
-Any Blu-ray or DVD-like source: VIDEO_TS folder, DVD image or real DVD, and some .VOB, .m2ts, and .TS files. Without VLC, Handbrake requires media to be unencrypted or already decrypted by third-party programs (i.e. DVD rippers).
-Almost any other multimedia file it can get libavformat to read and libavcodec to decode.

Outputs:
-File format: MP4 and MKV
-Video: MPEG-4, H.264, or Theora
-Audio: AAC, CoreAudio AAC (OS X Only), MP3, or Vorbis. AC-3 pass-through, DTS pass-through (MKV only)

Misc features:
-Support of chapter selections
-Support of subtitles
-Integrated bitrate calculator
-Picture deinterlacing, cropping and scaling
-Live Video Preview

I am with Guy Vago on this. “Handbrake” has been voted the best open source/Free video converter, with most compatibility.

You’ll have Have to select the quality/options to the minimal to get it compressed the most. But this will also decrease the quality of your movie. If its a home movie, it’s best to keep a back up of the original, and then you can make copies with handbrake to share with your friends.

I think you should save it to MP4 or MKV, because that is the best to keep the quality and size in a proper ratio. AVI files do tend to be smaller, but the quality is usually worse.

There will be a bunch of presets for you to play around with, i think the standard should be 420p width, and maybe 128-256kps variable AAC(not sure about the audio) and people mostly use the H264 codec to keep a lower size, and more quality

It could take time to convert your video, depending upon your CPU and GPU. Let it take it’s time, and if you use your system while its working it could make errors while converting your video.

Take care, but remember if you don’t know what you’re doing regarding the formats etc, just take a look at the presets and see what’s best for you. :)

.net framework 4.0 is not supported on Windows XP SP2.You’ll need to install XP SP3 to install it.
