How can I use free Fences in Windows 8?

Dhaval Kaneriya asks:

I recently installed Windows 8, but Fences is not working properly in Windows 8. Now what can I do to customize Windows desktop icon? Like alternative software to Fences.

if Fences not working as expected report the bug. Fences runs on the desktop, not on Metro. Fences Pro is not designed for Win8 and may not work as desired. Fences 2 is designed for Win 8.

Or nimi places which is exactly like fences.

Hello,
I have been using the Object Desktop from StarDock for the past couple of years which includes Fences Pro. When I first got it and started to use Fences I thought they were great for organizing my desktop however after a couple of years of use they are really no better than not having them. I personally have problems with my short term memory and can not use any of the launchers where you type in a key word or the name of the program to launch them, these work well for those who have great memories. Unfortunately I work best with visual cues so I love icons on my desktop but at this point with even using fences my desk top is a disaster area. The only thing having fences has done is make corralled areas for all the chaos. I recently ran across this article here on MUO http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/xlaunchpad-beautiful-windowsbased-program-launcher/ where they reviewed Xlaunchpad back in March. I just built a home theater PC for my parents for a Christmas gift and since they have used Windows XP for years and I installed Windows 7 Ultimate (I can’t stand Windows 8 and will never use it) so I can remain my mom’s tech support agent in the future. I decided to install XLaunchpad on this install and really like it and plan on ditching Fences Pro and setting everything up with Xlaunchpad on my personal system right after the holidays. I just went to their web site to check and they have updated it to work with Windows 8. Also if you are in the camp that likes to have some widgets on your desktop they also have developed XWidget as well. I looked at them and they have some interesting widgets, perhaps I will use a couple of them on my desktop. The great thing is that they are both free and if you think you would enjoy designing your own widgets they even have a widget editor built into the XWidget program. I have looked at all of the suggestions made here in the comments and all of them are very interesting. When you get a chance, do a search here on Make Use Of for free desktop customizations and you will be surprised and how many have been reviewed here giving both the pros and cons of each. Oh in case you are not opposed to a yearly subscription check out the Object Desktop as they have some new programs that are intended to work with Windows.
Good luck and have fun customizing your desktop.

Fences is compatible with Windows 8. I think the issue you are running into is you are using an older version of Fences. There is no free version of Fences any longer, as it has been replaced with the full version at a lower price than before.
