Trevor Lenten asks:
I am using a HP Pavillion DV7 CTO-4100 laptop with a Radeon HD 5650 and the video driver from HP is from 2010. Is there a way to update it? I tried using the AMD driver downloader, but I get an error message saying to use the manufacturers driver.

May 27, 2012Thank you for the links. I’m sorry, I should have clearly stated that I have checked on the official drivers from HP and the latest driver they offer is dated 12-03-2010, this is the driver I am currently using. I am trying driver easy am I write and will report back when it finishes the excruciatingly slow download.
Trying to post a solution but keep getting this undecipherable error message:
“You might have left one of the fields blank, or be posting too quickly”
No field is blank. And what does “posting too quickly” mean?

May 30, 2012There is very little reason for AMD’s (formerly, ATI) video driver to not work. My son has the same computer and rarely had problems updating drivers. However, one of my friends also purchased the same laptop and I saw something peculiar with his laptop that might be what you are having problems with. Nevertheless, I am going to suggest a few things that you will need to try to resolve the problem.
First, make sure that Windows Updates setting is set correctly. At the minimum, select the choice that notifies you that Windows updates are available, which allows you to then initiate the process of downloading and then applying the updates when Windows notifies you about them.
Second, in the Windows Update dialog box, make sure you choose to receive updates for Windows and other products from Microsoft Update. This will allow your computer to receive Windows updates, Microsoft Office Updates, and other optional updates. Under Optional Updates, you will find updates and drivers for all hardware installed in your laptop. Since these will be optional updates, you will have to manually mark them for installation. Install the drivers and you should be current.
More than likely, the above should address your problem. If not, this is where I take you to the issue that my friend faced with his laptop. I connected to his computer remotely and saw two video cards in “Device Manager:” the integrated (Intel) and discrete (AMD). The system was using the integrated GPU and not the AMD one. I did not have a chance to play around with it but here’s what you need to do first to see if you have a similar issue. Right-click on the desktop, then select “Screen Resolution.” There, click on the “Advanced Settings” link. Under the tab labeled “Adapter,” check what adapter is listed. If Intel is listed, that MIGHT explain why you got an error message when applying updates from AMD’s website. The solution to this? Restart your computer, go to BIOS settings, and disable “Integrated Video.” I am sorry I am not in front of that laptop or else I would have told you exactly how to get to that setting. I assume that there will be a setting to use “External Video.” Once you save and re-start the computer, Windows 7 will now download the correct video drivers from Microsoft Update and you should be in business.
Finally, here’s another issue that you may have run into. In the past, I have had issues with AMD drivers where the latest versions were not compatible with the video card. I had to look through the “Release Notes” to figure that out. Once I installed the older “legacy” version of the drivers, the video card worked fine. Fortunately for you, AMD has a driver verification tool at http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonmob_win7-64.aspx#1. Run that and, hopefully, that will provide you information to resolve your problem.
As the last resort, I would use drivers from HP’s support site. However, they may not be the most recent drivers. That said, if you run through the above steps, make sure Radeon Graphics is detected and used by Windows, and WIndows Updates is set to apply other updates from Microsoft Update, you will be in business. Please do NOT use or apply drivers from any site other than Microsoft Updates, HP Support, or AMD Graphics.
Apologies for the long response. I hope it helps.
Thank you for the “long reply”. My computer does indeed have hybrid graphics. (a horrible decision on my part when I bought it.) I have been living in “linux land” for the past year and a half, I thought it would be “easy” to update this dang driver in windows. I would switch the integrated card off in BIOS but HP BIOS suck and don’t offer me this feature. My current driver seems to work okay for diablo 3, I just thought I could get it took look “just a little bit better”.

June 1, 2012i never had hp, but toshiba changes their driver too, so you can’t install amd drivers, except if you modify them , and that is really complicated to do… so unfortunately if you don’t want to mess with modifying drivers, you need hp’s drivers
Do you know of any tutorials for this? I’m definitely not shy about getting my hands dirty.

July 19, 2012A complete failure of the card is an indication of a hardware failure while impaired functionality indicates a software or driver problem.
Keep your driver up-to-date so as to get your computer and devices working in harmony. Try this driver navigator. It can auto detect and download missing and unknown device drivers, repair incompatible or corrupted drivers and keep your driver up-to-date. It will help you a lot if you want to upgrade a driver, replace a driver, or troubleshoot device problems, especially good for video driver and sound driver. I downloaded from http://how-convert.com/driver-navigator.html
