How can I transfer ownership of a webhosting account?

A friend needs to transfer ownership of a website, including hosting and the domain (which I think is through the webhost as well). I know they’ll have to update user account information as well as whois information but is that all they need to do?

Hi, normally, when you register for an account/webhosting package with another hoster you will have to fill in the domainname you would like to use.

During the registration, the website of the new hoster will verify the domainname, and based on the whois information it will see that the domainname is already registered with another hoster. Most websites will then prompt you if you would like to transfer the domainname to the new hoster. If you answer yes, the new hoster will arrange the transfer for you (sometimes you will get an email with a link that you have to click on to verify your emailadres and confirm that you do want to transfer the domain name). And then you just have to wait a few hours until the transfer is complete.

After that, you can start transferring files/build a new website with your new hoster...

In broad terms yes the whois info needs to change. The domain registrar needs to be advised of the new owner details and transfer the domain to the new owners account. Similarly the company providing the web hosting needs to know who to bill in future.
The registrar and host should only act on proper authority from the current owner. It can get more complicated but let's cross that bridge when/if necessary....
