How can I remotely control pan, tilt, zoom and recording with an IP camera?

We recently installed a Axis 214 PTZ IP Camera to record demonstrations. The IP Camera’s feed is accessed thru an online interface. Currently we use VLC configured to access the IP of the camera and record the video, but with VLC the teacher cannot control the camera. We would like to embed a plugin to the online interface, so that the teacher could log in to the camera and press record and pan, tilt or zoom the camera.

The Axis cameras have their own live view web interface (not the configuration page) which should allow you to use those functions.
It offer different media types (MPEG4, M-JPG) so it should work on pretty much any platform.

There are also desktop software which offer those function like the Axis Camera Station and other third-party video surveillance software. Axis cameras are widely supported.
