Laptop repairs can be quite tricky, small components tightly packed and repair access is not a priority in laptops design. The quicker cheaper option might be to get an external (USB) microphone.

Tom Sobieski

Not only the easiest solution, but external USB mics are far better quality wise than whatever came with your machine

You don’t say exactly in what way it doesn’t work. If it is a hardware problem, then Rob’s right – it would be difficult (or expensive) to repair, but if it is a software or configuration problem, then you need to tell us *exactly* what the problem is (for example, “when using Skype the microphone does not show up as an input device”).

Madelyn Manicat

“when using Skype the microphone does not show up as an input device”). correct!!! and also in YM Messenger, I can’t use the internal and external mic…

In that case, open your device manager (RIGHT-click on “Computer”, and choose “Manage”, then click “Device manager”), find the microphone or any “unrecognised devices” and remove the device by pressing the [Delete] key. Reboot the computer and let it “rediscover” and reinstall the microphone. If this doesn’t work, download a fresh copy of the driver from the Dell support website and install it. Good luck!

You might want to try reinstalling the driver first. Maybe it just got corrupted for some reason.

This answer looks good. From the link maybe try:

“1. Click [the Start Button]

2. When the menu opens, highlight either All Programs or Programs.

3. Click the Dell Webcam folder, then click the Dell Webcam Manager icon to open it.

4. In the Dell Webcam Manager, click the Dell Webcam Center.

5. In the lower right-hand corner of the Dell Webcam Center window, click the drop-down arrow next to Audio Source and click Digital Mic (Realtek High Definition Audio) to enable the microphone.”

Go over to “Device Manager”. Try disabling and enabling your sound driver. If that doesn’t work, select your microphone driver and click on “uninstall” under “Actions” tab. And restart your computer. If all goes well, your microphone should be up and working. Let us know if your issue is resolved.
