How can I edit .AVI videos and upload them to YouTube?

I’m a complete noob when it comes to video editing. I’m interesting in suggestions for free program to edit my homemade videos (merge,cut etc.) and then preferably upload them to YouTube or similar service. The standard format of my video files are .avi.
