How can I make high quality .gif with small filesize?

How can I create high-res .gifs from .mkv files with a small filesize?

I use Gimp 2.8, Paint.NET and PhotoShop. I’ll try additional software/utilities if necessary.

    You can make your gifs then resize them online with PunyPNG link:
    They claim they can reduce the filesize without loss of quality.

    You can use Trim command to reduce the size in Photoshop or try resize online here

    You might be better off using .jpg files instead of .gif since you will lose color depth by converting to .gif.

    As far as getting the initial caps, you can use VLC and use the Video -> Take Snapshot option to grab the frames you want. There are also automated tools (or once were) that would take a vid cap at specified intervals. I haven't searched for any for years, but I would assume they still exist.
