Are RAM optimization programs any good. I’ve heard they’re a waste of time, if good then which one do readers recommend?

    Andrew,

RAM optimization programs are good in some cases. Usually, rebooting works just as well.

However, if you don't want to reboot your machine for days on end or if you heavily use your computer, i.e. constantly open and close tons of programs, you will probably find that RAM optimization tools do improve performance.

If you consider spending money for a RAM optimization program, reconsider and rather invest in a RAM upgrade.

In the meantime, try some free software. Varun recommends CleanMem: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/cleanmem-a-memory-cleaner-that-works/

If you're looking for more memory, you may also want to optimize what your computer is running in the background and strip it down to what you really need. Guy's article explains how: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-tospeed-up-your-computer-with-just-one-double-click/
