How can I give someone limited remote access to a computer in a different physical location?

Bharath Jagannathan asks:

The SCADA application, which monitors and displays the data from all the field devices like inverters, meters etc., is installed in the Local SCADA PC (on-site). We need to replicate the same information on the Remote SCADA PC which is 50 KMs from the site. So, the same screen display is to be available on the Remote PC as that of the Site PC.

For example, TeamViewer gives this kind of access. However, with TeamViewer, the person handling the Remote SCADA PC can navigate through the pages. Basically, the person has full control of the system. We would want to avoid this. The Site PC should be the MASTER and ultimately, the page (data) which is being viewed by the people on-site, only that should be available on the Remote PC. We cannot give the Remote User any Control over the Local Site PC.

Also, we would like to give 5 users access to the Local SCADA PC. So people from 5 different places to get access to the Site PC simultaneously. Again, only monitoring, but no control over the Local PC. Is this possible?

If you are using windows server, then you need to create an Active Directory. Through this, you can manage a user who can access the server/application without full access control. If you already setup the active directory you can use Remote Desktop to access your server.

To create Active Directory, follow this instruction:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324753

After creating active directory, you need to create a user account and insert it into remote desktop group.

You could set it up to broadcast the screen using http://www.join.me. I believe you’re able to allow connected users to control the mouse this way, but only in the application that is on screen being broadcast. I should mention that the basics of join.me are free.

Logmein.com has free and paid accounts. I believe it can allow granular access.

iTalc is a classroom presentation software. It can do read-only display of a screen for multiple people, and it’s free. Might be worth looking into.

The teamviewer program, in the settings panel, give you the level and quantity of progams and funtions the remote can open.
If you don’t wish the remote go to control panel, use msconfig or ctrl+alt+del, in the options you have the chance to block it.

How about Logmein free? I find it very useful and can connect with any computer you can find. Just needs to be connected to the internet and have a browser installed!

You can do this with TeamViewer. On the machine that you want them to be able to view, go to Extras -> Options. Select Advanced and click on the Show Advanced Options button. Scroll down to ‘Advanced settings for connections to this computer’. Change Access Control to ‘Custom Settings’. Click on the Configure… button. Leave the Connect and view my screen as Allowed and change all other options to Disabled. Click on OK to complete.

There are a couple of options available, but i prefer Teamviewer as you don’t have to install it in order to use it (is portable). Just run the installer, select when asked “Run (no install)” and there you go .. after you close the session the software is not installed.

You can try RealVNC and also teamviewer settings can be changed for not giving fulll access

Oron

I second that. Both TeamViewer and VNC (tiny, real or otherwise) are excellent products and have options to disable remote input. However, TeamViewer is only free for personal use, so it sounds like you might need to buy a licence, which make this a less attractive option.

I know this is a dead thread, but you could also use hamachi along with homesharing, and make all of those files read only. The connected hamachi computer will show that it’s on the same network as the main computer, and you will be able to access all the files, if you want some writeable files, then just change the individual file permissions.
