What does generic OS mean in feature description of a mobile phone?

sujith asks:

Does generic OS (mentioned so in features for a mobile handset – cf http://mymobile.co.in/my-compare.php) mean Symbian v 9.4 OS?
If so, can I install the office suite (Excel, Word) onto a mobile handset run on this platform? Where can I download office suite for this purpose from?

The word ‘generic’ usually should imply something that’s common across systems. For Office apps purposes, you can download QuickOffice for Symbian devcies. It’s pretty good (I have a Nokia E63 with QuickOffice installed). Though, its not free…but it should be installed by default on your phone. Otherwise it costs about $20 or approx INR 800.
