Raj Kutty asks:
This will be used for a private business I work for, which has different groups of field technicians in different areas of the country. Each group of technicians have a manager, like me, responsible for their performance.
To hit the performance goals, constant communication is a must. For me, this would be a great tool to communicate more efficiently with my group of techs. I’m sure all the other managers would love using this, too.

July 17, 2012I think using Skype would be a more professional approach in your situation. You can make conference calls with up to 24 people or video conference calls up to the same number of people.
That way you are not joining a chatroom to discuss business.
Skype is free, all you need is a headset with a microphone and you are set to go.
More details here: https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA2831/making-a-conference-call-windows

July 17, 2012Hi Raj,
Check out this article here on MUO – http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/gtext-free-group-text-messaging/
Also around the web are:
https://www.sendhub.com/
http://www.wetxt.com
http://www.bloove.com/en/
https://groupme.com/
http://www.cellsea.com/media/smsindex.htm
http://ohdontforget.com/
Now, I have not taken the time to test all these; but they all claim to be free – albeit some more basic than others.
Good luck on your search.

July 17, 2012In my most professional opinion on this, you should use an email account and not a website. Just type a phone number as a recipient and it’s lightning fast.

July 17, 2012I’d recommend Skype or Facebook messaging. However, and assuming you are in India, if you want to send text messages, “160by2.com” has never let me down. Of course, due to TRAI regulations, you cannot send messages to multiple people at once and I think that there is a cap on how many texts you can send in one day (not sure about this though). Try it out, it’s free!

July 17, 2012Assuming that you reside in India ,As mentioned above you can use SMS GupShup ( http://www.smsgupshup.com ).
While creating the group in GupShup make sure you make it “Private” so that only your colleagues can join it.
http://www.way2sms.com and http://www.160by2.com are good alternatives.
However ,all free services have advertisements featured at the end of the text message.
Since you mentioned that it for business use you can buy a paid service like SMS Gupshup Enterpise (http://enterprise.smsgupshup.com/) or SMSGold (http://www.indyarocks.com/mvas/smsgold_main.php) to avoid advertisements.

July 18, 2012The best option would be to register at smsgupshup.com ,create your own group and they have other apps which would help your use case.
Thanks

July 19, 2012This isn’t quite using a website, but it might just as effective. If you look at GroupMe, you can send group texts to people. Someone has to set it up using a smartphone, but it’s not required to have one to be part of a group. It is “free” (you have to use internet) if you use the app. Otherwise the person/you will have to pay the normal fees for each text.
I’ve used GroupMe at my work and it is really convenient since you can form multiple groups and its easy to see who sent each text.

July 21, 2012I really appreciate everyone taking their time to help out here with this question. Let me add some details to give you all a better picture of why I need this and its intended use.
1) WHERE: It will be used in the United States
2) WHO: It is being used as a form of communication among the 7 different teams working out in the field. The teams range in size of 4 to 54 members.
3) FREQUENCY: Communication can ranges form 2 times a week to 20 times a week for each group or all the groups.
4) SENSITIVITY: Very Sensitive, the communication must happen real time as it is primarily about the work being conducted the day of.
I researched this topic for hours with no luck! I know there has to be something out there, at least for these marketers/spammers.

July 23, 2012You use Yahoo! mail to send messages to phones via SMS messaging. If you want send messages to a group on the computer it is easy to use either Skype, or OovoO.

August 7, 2012Send a text from your email is easy but you will need to know each persons phone carrier, if they send a test to your email, keep that info and here is what most will look like, the cell # first and then…
Note each cell phone provider’s designated domain for computer to text messages: Alltel – @message.alltel.com; AT Boost Mobile – @myboostmobile.com; Sprint – @messaging.sprintpcs.com (for those still on Nextel replace sprintpcs with nextel; T-Mobile – @tmomail.net; Verizon – @vtext.com; Virgin Mobile – @vmobl.com.
