.com names cost people money, so companies don’t give them out for free, unless you purchase hosting with them.

If the information on the page is correct you should be able to get a free WordPress blog at Blogetery together with the option to map your own “.com” domain to it.
One alternative I know if is using WordPress with domain mapping which unfortunately costs $12 per year.
The only other options I can think of is URL forwarding:
all users going to your “example.com” will be forwarded to wherever your blog is e.g. “yourname.wordpress.com”
or URL masking:
the domain points to e.g. “yourname.wordpress.com” but visitors will always see “example.com” with the downside being you can’t direct links to certain posts
