My sorority would like to create a professional looking website, with the address looking like http://www.OURNAME.com (or .org). We are trying to find a site that will allow us to register our .com or .org domain name for free. Are there any sites that will allow us to do this whole process for free?

Thanks!

    Hi
I think their are only two ways to get free domains. And everyone knows these methods.
These are Blogger and wordpress. If any one knows to get free domain please tell me.
Here is a way to get free domain and free webhosting. These are co.cc and 000webhosting.com

Getting a free .com or .org domain is possible only in a contest or giveaway. Reason being that these two are very popular domain names, and hence doesn't come for free. But let's see what all possibilities we have for your little problem.

    1) As was pointed out by Nancy above, you can get a free domain from a hosting service like Bluehost, Hostgator etc. But you'll be paying a lot more for hosting than you would be paying for the domain. So I think we can safely reject this option.

    2) You can go for a subdomain of the form xyz.blogspot.com or xyz.wordpress.com. These are free blogging platforms that also provide free hosting. If this meets your requirement you can go for it.

    3) If you don't want a subdomain but your own domain, then you can go for .co.cc domains.
Advantage is you can register 2 domains for free with zero renewal fees. You can also earn from its referral program.
Disadvantage is that if you place ads on your Domain, then you have to pay 3$ as renewal fee every year otherwise your Domain name will be deleted.

    4) If none of the above options satisfies you then if you modify your condition slightly, you can grab a .com or .org domain for very small price. Use following Godaddy coupon code while registering a domain:

    a) gofivgind2 : Get .com domain for $5.99/year. Special price valid only for the first year.
    b) goaz2001ai : Get .com domain for $6.99 (+icann fee) per year. You can register for upto 10 years at this rate.
    c) cjctld749 : Get .org domain for $7.49.
GoDaddy comes up with such coupon codes every month. You can Google to get these codes.

    5) Netfirms is giving .com domains for $3.99 for the first year to facebook users. Check it out here. http://www.facebook.com/netfirmsfans?v=app_7146470109

Hope one of these will help you out.

Looks like you are into some luck. http://order.1and1.com/ is giving .com domain for free for one year till 31st may 2010. Their renewal rate is $8.99 per year. There is a limit of one domain per customer. So go ahead and get your domain before 31st may.

You still have to provide them with a Credit Card number and a PayPal account, and they'll still probably charge you for it.

I once get a one year free .com and .org domains for from Microsoft when they were promoting their Live service. But that kind of miracle happens only once in a blue moon.

The cheapest alternative that I could think is getting yourself a reseller account and buy (hosting and domain) at reseller price. I've been doing this for my personal use for the past several years with my thurana.com. If you are interested, there's the small "Reseller hosting" link at the top right of the page to sign up. It's free.

      Thurana,
You can still find plans cheaper than a reseller price, and you still got to buy it.

Just to point out to readers, that "Reseller hosting" link Thurana is pointing out is an affiliate link. The non-affiliate link is http://www.resellerspanel.com/

Hi, Taty is right, 10 $ a year is kind of free anyway, then to have hosting free, you may go to blogspot.com and forward your domine ($us 10 per year) and to your webpage.
yourname.blogspot.com so, everyone to write http://www.yourname.com will be redirected to yourname.blogspot.com. You can do the same with wordpress, but there the redirection is charged to you.
    Good luck

    Hi Rachelia
Yes, catchy problem. You can usually get a free domain, but that implies paying much more for some other service, such as hosting. considering domains only cost around $10 year, they are the least of your costs when trying to get a site. If you don't mind a sub-domain, there are a lot of options for free websites. Blogger ( which will give you a domain such as: YOURNAME. blogspot.com or wordpress.com, which will give you an address such as: YOURNAME.wordpress.com.
Good luck and be careful not to fall for tricks to get you to pay for other services.

Unless there is a competition, some sort of giveaway, you will not get a .com or .org domain name for free. The reason being that someone still has to pay for it. NameCheap has a large competition about 2 times a year giving out domain names every hour for about a week. I've won 10 so far.

You can get a free domain name when you purchase your hosting from bluehost http://www.bluehost.com/
but from what I understand - you don't want to pay for the hosting either?

I highly doubt there's any way to get a specific .com or .org domain name for free but you could check out this article on how to get a free .co.cc domain name.
