How can I format my external drive for Windows 7?

I have a 1TB external hard drive that operates on Linux whereas my laptop operates on Windows 7. I cannot access the files from my laptop without a Linux reader and I find it rather cumbersome to use. Is there a way to format the external drive to also operate on Windows 7 ?

    format it in fat32,

    windows 7 :right click on drive and click on format, select fat32

      my flash drive transcend JFV30/4GB is not working . it asked to do format but it doesnot format says that"window was unable to complete the format". now please please help me.

        Go here http://www.transcend-info.com/Support/DLCenter/index.asp and download the JF format tool for your device. You will need to go through its selection process yourself since it does not simply create a copyable link that I could paste here. (USB Flash Drive -> Classic Device -> JetFlash V30 -> TS4GJFV30) then click on the Software tab.

      my flash drive name Transcend JF V30 /4GB is not working. it asked to do format but it doesnot .says that" Window was unable to complete the format". now what to do please please help me .

    Hello, you could convert the external to FAT32.  If you converted to FAT32 it will be compatible to be read by both operating systems.  You can use the disk utilities in linux to format your drive to FAT32.

    You can do this in windows seven by using the disk management utility.  If that gives you trouble you can use the following:
