How can I find out what is taking up bandwidth while gaming?

Rudy Maya asks:

About a month ago, randomly when I am playing an online game [League of Legends], my ping shoots up to 300 and beyond for a few seconds and then goes down to 40 again.

I ALT TAB really quick and see what it is, but nothing is updating. I have checked browsers, java update, Windows update, antivirus etc. and I can’t figure out what it is.

So I wanted to know if anyone knew about a program that can track what programs are taking up bandwidth or something similar. Any tips are appreciated. Thanks!

Windows 7, custom computer, so if you want to know anything specific let me know.

Well.. I could recommend you to have a Process Explorer (from Sysinternals) running in the background while playing… Don’t forget to customize for this utility the columns that you want to see for the Process View. You should select “Process Network” columns according to your interests/concerns (received bytes, sent bytes, “deltas”, etc)

Netbalancer

Since you are running Windows 7 you can use the Resource Monitor

TCPVIEW is a TCP and UDP port connection monitor

Are you the only user on the network? Are there mobile devices connected e.g. via WiFi?

Chances are some other device on the network was retrieving emails, loading a page in browser or checking for updates.

Go in task manager and see what processes are running and see if any are ones that would need to access the internet

The best way and in my opinion the simplest can be by going to Task Manager > Clicking on the Performance Tab > Click on Resource Monitor. Once it opens up click on the network tab and you will see which application is taking how much bandwidth.

Press Control+Alt+Delete and choose Task Manager. Look at the tabs to find out what process is slowing you down.
