How does Facebook select the 3 photos from an album to show on your page?

Linda Jones asks:

Selecting the cover photo is simple, but with the new system, I cannot figure out how to force the other 3 photos to be the ones I choose. It’s not the first 3 I upload, it’s not the oldest 3 by file date, and it’s not alphabetical. If I move the photos around in the album, it no longer changes what appears on my page (in older versions it did). Anybody figured this out yet?

It’s the newest 3 by “date modified”.
I have tested it thrice.

Screenshot of fb upload and source folder sorted by date modified.

Put some photos in a folder and sort them by “date modified” (descending order newest first)

Facebook uploads pics in the same order.
And it will show the first 4 photos on your page and newsfeed of your friends.

First one will be the cover photo, even if you change the cover photo it will not change in the 4 photos on your profile.

So I think, if you want those 4 pics to be of your choice, then…
apply some minor editing to your selected 4 photos with a software like paint or photoshop.

So, those pics will be the first 4 when sorted by “date modified”, which is also the order which facebook follows in uploading them.

Facebook chooses by date modified. So the most recent pictures will be the ones it shows.
