Do I need a certain type of external hard drive to connect to my TV and record onto or is any hard drive compatible?

flash drives are more compatible than herd drives.
it's good that you are first looking for a compatible drive, rather than complaining after purchasing.
    read this :

Hello, best way to find that out is by checking the manufacturer's website or your manual.  The FAT32 format is recommended but there are some TVs that are compatible with NTFS.  I do not think you can directly record on an external hard drive from a TV though....you can watch contents of hard drive on TV as long as the format is compatible but not record content to it by itself.   As far as I know, only way would be if you have DVR that can expand the storage by attaching an external hard drive.

sometime big hard drive capacities are not recommended depending on Monitor specifications. Also format hard drive to FAT32
