OS Commerce is very difficult to install and use – and it’s very limiting. There’s not enough features to run an entire professional business. The same goes with ZenCart. Magento almost has it right, but it’s also very difficult to install and it’s slow.

You should look into a total online business platform such as http://www.haikuob.com which handles shopping cart, website, customer database and marketing features. It’s a hosted solution so you don’t have to worry about the technical stuff either. All the other bases are also integrated, such as the payment gateways, shipping modules etc., and you can even give your customers coupons and vouchers. More so, SEO is included. It’s an all in one solution so you don’t need to juggle multiple systems.

If you're hosting yourself, you might also want to consider e-commerce plugin for wordpress (http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/easily-turn-wordpress-blog-ecommerce-site/). There is very little between them all, but in my experience I tend to stay away from ASP and stick with PHP. ZenCart or Magento seem to be the most popular. I think it's more of a personal preference issue, so have a go with all of them and see which interface you prefer. Wordpress is the most familiar for clients, so I tend to recommend that if they don't want to fiddle with code too much.

You could also consider a cloud solution like http://www.shopify.com , that takes away all the hassle of technical issues and lets you focus on the products.
