How can I download and install Android apps directly on my phone?

Nicole asks:

I have downloaded from the Android app store with my phone plugged into my computer, so I download directly to my phone. I click install on the app I want and I get a message “this app will be downloaded to your device shortly”. However, nothing happens on my phone. Do I need to have credit on my phone to do this??

see if Google Talk Service and Storage are running. They are needed to send apps from the market to your phone using your pc.

Can someone explain this to a new Android “Smart Phone” user???  If one lives in an area of poor cell reception, then a computer would be a great way to go.
