How do I get rid of the boxes that appear when I place the cursor over an icon in Windows XP Home and Internet Explorer 7?

Go to Control Panel -> Folder Options.  Select the View tab.  Scroll to the bottom of the list and uncheck the box for "Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items".  That will get rid of the tooltips for Windows Explorer and the desktop.  I'm still checking out what we can do for IE7.

    Peter,

I'm not sure which boxes you are referring to. Do you mean the tooltips that describe what the respective button does? If that's not it, could you please try to provide a better description? Thank you!
