How can I convert and watch videos from an external hard drive on my Sharp Aquos TV?

Michael Short asks:

I have a 1.5TB self-powered external hard drive, a Toppro TPR-5000 PVR & a Sharp Aquos TV (LC-40LB700X). I would like to know if it is possible to watch videos from the drive on the TV.

If so, which format would be best for both the hard drive & the TV and what would be the fastest way to convert the videos to the required file type?

If this (http://www.itopfield.com.au/product-detail.asp?idx=255) is your hard drive, you have an HDMI output. If you have HDMI (if this is your tv http://www.sharp.net.au/product-archive/products/LC40LB700X/ ,then you have three), you can probably watch your video’s. Hook them up with an hdmi cable and you’re good to go.
You don’t neccesserily have to convert them, unless the hard drive is not able to play them. In that case, you have to convert them. You have to move them to your computer and convert them with a converter. Makeuseof has a ton of them, they even have a tag for it: http://www.makeuseof.com/tags/video-converter/ and you can probably use any of them.
good luck

If that doesn’t work and you have an USB connector on your tv, then your tv should be able to view avi, mpg, or mp4 formatted videos. If you don’t have the videos in these formats, then it is likely that the tv will not recognize the videos. Use Freemake video converter or other video converter you are familiar with to convert the videos to avi format or the other formats in high quality, though the video files will be larger for the higher quality. Connect the hard drive to the tv using an USB cord and check to see if it works.
