How can I convert video files without losing quality?

When I convert a file to a different format using a variety of programs, I always find the resultant file is degraded. Usually, I get a broken or rough edge to near horizontal lines. I still get this even if I keep parameters like frame speed and picture size the same.

Hello, if you want to keep similar quality when converting a file, you will need to increase the framerate.  Let's say that you have a video file with a framerate of 900 kbps, when you convert it to another format, try to go for higher framerate like 1200 kbps.  Only thing with this is that the file will be bigger and the conversion will take a little bit longer to finish.  It also depends on what software you use for the converting.  Most basic video converters provide few or none options about the conversion.  If you use media coder of super, you have a few more options to play with the bitrate of sound/video.

Another factor that affects the conversion is the format you are converting too.  As you may know, there lossy and losless formats.  If you are converting files to .avi format, they will always loose some of the quality because .avi is a lossy format.
