Why not just install Open Office from http://www.openoffice.org. I think it will handle both odt and doc formats and you can convert odt to doc by simply opening odt file using the Open Office and then use “save as” option and save as a .doc file.

Apart from solving the conversion issue, I think Open Office an excellent software by itself and am planning to convert from MS – Office to Open Office soon. It has all the features of last MS – Office I used (2007, I think) and it can handle all sorts of formats that MS – Office can’t

You may also use online conversion services like Zamzar (no signup needed).

    Hi Patricia
With most recent versions of Office (Microsoft Office 2007 – Service Pack 1 or higher, Microsoft Office 2003, XP and Microsoft Office 2000), you can download a little plugin from Sun:
    http://www.sun.com/software/star/odf_plugin/index.jsp
which will convert the file for you. Just install the plugin, open Word and open the odf file from inside Word. From there you can just use it as any other Word file.
