Why can I not connect to WPA protected WIFI via Ubuntu 11.10?

I can’t connect to a WPA encrypted WiFi connection using a USB dongle (BT home hub). It will occasionally connectm but most of the time won’t.

It connects to non password protected networks OK. Presumably the WIFI drivers are OK? It’s on dual boot system with Windows XP and that connects with no problem.
Any Ideas?

uninstall the networkmanager and install wicd

    or
    sudo apt-get clean
    sudo apt-get install --reinstall network-manager
