Why can’t my computer find files on my Seagate hard drive?
Question by John /

I have a 1tb Seagate external hard drive. It has 230 GB free space. When I try to open any video, picture or document it doesn’t open and it says that the file is no longer in that location. In some of the folder files shows some of the video and pictures icons but they still can’t locate. Some other folders are empty. What can I do to get my stuff back as well as to open them.

What happens if you try to copy one of the vids to your computer? Are you able to create files on the drive? Want to verify that you have full access to the files/folders on the drive before we go any further. I’d also try a different usb cable if possible. Also try this, click the start orb, and in the box type explorer, then when it shows up in the menu, right cilck on it and select “Run as Administrator”. Then try to play a video out of that explorer window. I’m wondering if there’s either a power issue, or a permissions issue. Also what do you see when you right click on one of the files and look at the properties? Does it show the correct path to the file? Sorry one more question, when you try to open the file(s) is it the program that’s trying to open them stating the file can’t be found, or is it a generic windows error? What if you try to open the file from within the program that plays it?
