How can someone compare speeds of Intel vs. AMD processors when trying to buy a computer?

John Billington asks:

I’m shopping for a laptop and am having a really difficult time comparing processors. Which ones are faster/newer/better? Pentium T4500, Althlon II, Althlon Dual Core, iCore, Celeron Dual Core, Althlon 64, AMD Turion etc. Is there a chart somewhere that ranks these?

It all depends on your budget. If you have a lot of money, you should go for an Intel CPU. If you dont, you have to do some research and be aware thar the performance of the CPU is affected by the amount of system memory and the motherboard’s Chipset.

+1 to Tom’s for being a little more interactive than the Passmark site. Also, one typically doesn’t have the choice of enterprise level server CPUs when shopping the typical channels.

I was looking for that link. I knew that site had a comparison chart, but I couldn’t find it when I was looking for it.
