I have a scanned copy of a really old black & white portrait that I want colored. I don’t want to hand it to the professionals but rather do the job myself as there’s no time constraint.
To start with, I have an aging computer with Adobe Photoshop 7. What service/software is/are required to accomplish the job:
a. VERY SIMPLY,
b. with “Lo-and-Behold”-ing results, and
c. for FREE?
Please give me your tried-and-tested suggestions only.

Thank you all for your inputs. Especially Jay, thanks for the link to madtuts dot com. The linked article is simple enough. It’s taken me the whole day today, but I’m getting close to the result I want. Will update with furthur progress.

if you have a don’t have a plain background,
You can color the subject only, and leave the background black and white, so it will be an effect,and will also save your time
I colorized an old wedding picture for my in-laws 50th. It was very intense as they were married in an old hall where lath and plaster showed through the bridal veil and the bride had a dozen roses in her hand.
I did it in Photoshop7.

Hello, there are several ways of doing this, if you want to try and do it with your installation of photoshop, you could try the following:

With other software, there is usually filters for doing this.
