My family has invested in multiple Kindle Fire devices and I was wondering if there is an app (Kindle Fire-compatible of course) which will allow users on the same Wi-Fi network to chat with one another – without having to use an online chat program?

Sure, we could easily go across the house to chat face to face, but when we are all so busy with our own things, it would be nice to have a way to text or chat over our house Wi-Fi.
