How can I verify that my copy of the Windows Operating System is genuine other than by using Windows Genuine Advantage? This relates to Windows XP and above.

If Windows was pre-installed on the system there should be a Proof of License / Certificate of Authenticity somewhere on the case of the system.

If Windows was purchased retail this Proof of License/COA should be somewhere in the packaging or on the CD/DVD case.

As Hovsep answered below, WGA is the official tool to determine whether Windows is genuine or not.
