Okay..Finally the issue was resolved...I contacted Microsoft Customer Support and with a tweak in my proxy settings (Setting it to Automatic Detection) I could successfully update to Windows 8.1.... :-D

You can so do so by looking at this if you have a Windows 8: http://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-download-the-official-microsoft-windows-8-1-iso/.

are you trying to update windows 8 to windows 8.1? The best will be Windows store in order to avoid problems or a friend who already downloaded from windows store, made a dvd.

I assume that you mean Windows 8.1 update, rather Windows 8.1 ("update" is the latest, and is required in order to continue receiving security updates). If you don't want to download it using the Windows Update service, see http://www.extremetech.com/computing/178091-how-to-download-and-install-windows-8-1-update-1-for-free-right-now for links to the standalone versions.
