control panel - hardware and sound - select Synaptics - reset to default option should be there
you can also try to uninstall/reinstall driver
or double tap the mousepad in the top left corner to lock/unlock the mouse pad

Thank you. Nice finds! Please tell , whether double tapping in top left corner would unlock AFTER pad gets locked unintentionally. The prior two options mentioned by you are addition to double-tap process or part of double-tap

the first one can reset to default if something is wrong there
the driver enable you to get clean and solve other problems
the third one is for on the road anytime you can apply, it should unlock if you suddenly locked touchpad.

i dont know if the third option is for every touchpad but trying it is easy
on some Compaq Presarios there is a button at the top of the touchpad that will disable touch pad
      Using and Configuring the ClickPad

you can also doubleclick the led light on/off touchpad.

Next or above to the touchpad, there is a small LED, double tap on it to unlock the touchpad

you can use Fn+F(one of the f keys)

some Acer laptops have a key to the left of the On/Off button.
