Well I've got part way and downloaded Adobe Digital Editions. Now I need to wait for the rugrats to go to bed and I can concentrate on the next bit!

And if you do want instructions on how to root the Kindle Fire HD, go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2351201

I read the instructions and I've decided that I'm a computer coward! I don't understand sufficiently to get out of a hole if I fall in one. Maybe the answer below will be more suitable for my skill level.
      Thanks for your reply.

In a nutshell, no. If you haven't rooted the device, you can only buy books from Amazon's store and not Google's. So if you do want to use the Play store to buy and sync your books, you have to root the device.
