Where can I host email with my own domain name for free?

I want to have a custom email address like mail@mydomain.com. Is there any way to host it on Google Apps for free. If not, what’s the best free alternative? This type of question has been posted before but I could not find any recent one.

You *can* do it with Google Apps. I'm doing it for my domain. But you get only 5 free email addresses. Though there is that limitation, when signing up for a google apps account, you get a whole host of services (e.g. Drive, Calendar, Talk) for your domain that you wouldn't get elsewhere. All you really need to do is activate it for your apps account and point the MX records for your domain to Google's server. You can read more how to do this here:

You can do it with the free version of Zoho mail, and you get 10 free email addresses! You do have to pay for your domain name though...

You can't do that with the free version of GMail nor, as far as I know, with Outlook.com or Yahoo. Does it need to be a webmail system or would ordinary mail hosting do?
