How can I fix problems with browsers crashing on Windows XP?

I am getting very frustrated with Windows XP when using either Chrome or Firefox browsers. For example, I click anywhere within the browser while using Gmail and the browser closes. I have typed something and the cursor jumps. I don’t know whether it’s a Windows XP issue or a browser issue. Does anyone else experience the same problem? Can I change something in the settings so that when I click on anywhere on a page other than to close the browser it actually stays open? This has happened many times before and I am getting tired of this. Any suggestions?

Thank you,
Maria B.

Having done a good cleanup as Hovsep suggests (I recommend CCleaner, which is safe, effective and free), disable all addons in Firefox and Extensions in Chrome and try again.
If the problem disappears, it was one of the addons/extensions and you can start enabling them one by one until the problem returns which will tell you which one it was. If the problem continues, it's probably a fault in Windows.
