Does Facebook’s new ‘nearby friends’ feature have a ‘public share’ option too?

•You can select the groups on Facebook with which you want to share your location. You can't share your location with the public or with friends of friends. You can only share it with friends or other groups that you have created, like "close friends" or "family."

Thanks. I viewed both the articles , 1) but neither specifies that 'public' option is NOT available. In other words , if I am at a group meeting , I could know which persons in group are on fb to add them ; which could be implemented with 'public' option!

      2) Does it share in 'real time' as the user moves?

If you turn on Nearby Friends, you can also choose to share a precise location with the particular friends you choose for a set period of time, such as the next hour. When you share your precise location, the friend you choose will see exactly where you are on a map, which helps you find each other. Then you can meet up and spend time together.

For convenience, Facebook automatically begins tracking friends of NF users as soon as they sign into Facebook. Past locations can be deleted by the user; however Facebook retains that information in their databases.

if you mean like GPS i dont think so, it will show locations, broadcast your approximate location. Push notifications will remind users that they are sharing their location.

Thanks. Does 'exact location' for 'x' minutes imply 'motion in real time' or 'static location'?

i think it is more static location, it is not gps guided motion

Thanks! I understand. 1) Is there an option to choose between 'latitude / longitude' and GPS , to enable motion in real time? , 2) At what distance in km ( or miles ) does one get notification of friend nearby?

i think this option does not exist, perhaps because it is not the way that Nearby Friends works, share your exact location with him or her for a set amount of time. When a friend shares exact location with you, you'll receive a notification alert. If you click on the notification you will now see a map with a place pin marking your friend's exact location. Your Nearby friend's location will continue to update as long as the person is sharing it with you, which means that if you walk toward one another, for example, you should see that unfold in real-time on the map.

Thanks. Nice search done! You mentioned " When a friend shares exact location with you, you’ll receive a notification alert." please tell , 1) [ isnt notification received if the feature is turned on BUT irrespective or exact or approximate location is shared ] ?
because article seems to suggest the implication in brackets.
2] Does location sharing in real time is also available in this feature? If it does not use GPS , such real time location can work?

Nearby Friends will track friends and alert each other when they are close to each one another. you can click the little directional-arrow button to the right of that user's name; this enables you to share your exact location with him or her for a set amount of time. If you no longer wish to broadcast your general location with friends, click on the "Settings" button in the upper right-hand corner within Nearby Friends, and switch the setting to the off position. Users can turn it off and back on at will or they can set a time slot for when certain features will be on.

Thanks! thats kind of you to tell. If not bored with this topic , please tell , do you think this feature would evolve from 'nearby friends' into 'find friends nearby' of about two ago tested as part of hackathon

Corrected : Thanks! thats kind of you to tell. If not bored with this topic , please tell , do you think this feature would evolve from 'nearby friends' into 'find friends nearby' of about two YEARS ago tested as part of hackathon, to help know which friends in a conference are on fb instead of directly asking them

i cant tell that it is possible but the reason why nearby friends works is that facebook user activate this feature, the other find friends nearby if i understand correctly is that everybody broadcasting their position and this automatically without their interference.

Thanks! As it is a opt-in feature , the hackathon feature can get evolved in this 'comparatively restricted sharing' , to enable finding Fb contacts in picnic or conference group , thus 'nearby friends' with adding the feature would also be 'find friends nearby' feature of years back , reportedly from same Glancee app

In other words , can it evolve with 'public sharing' as opt-in to enable finding friends on fb nearby

I cant pronounce for Facebook, Facebook Nearby Friends will remain in its vocation, extending is possible but within which range remains mystery, i think Nearby Friends is more social than business. What you want is possible if the person enabled Nearby Friends then it is possible finding Fb contacts in picnic or conference group, as long as the person is close to you then meeting is possible.

Thanks. The blogs mention that the location is not by GPS but by another system ( wifi / latitude , longitude !? ) Does it make the feature less approximate? and reason for this is to avoid battery drain? Is sharing by NON-GPS is mandatory or one can even opt-in to GPS sharing? ( but blogs mention non-GPS! )

To display your exact location to anyone, both you and your friend have to mutually agree to share location information. Then you can opt to take the extra step to show your precise location
      http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-switch/wp/2014/04/17/facebook-rolls-out-nearby-friends-a-real-time-friend-tracker/

well precise location is precise by GPS, but you are not forced to reveal precise location, because if you use this app then your GPS is ON for longtime even 24h unless you decide not to broadcast your precise location.

the GPS feature itself seems pretty innocuous. The "precise location" broadcast only lasts as long as you allow it to, and only gets sent to the people you choose.

Users can decide whether Facebook reveals your location down to the half mile or as close as they can get using GPS and triangulating between cellphone towers.
