Why can’t I boot into OS X on my Hackintosh?

I had a Hackintosh built and have been using both PC and Mac OS X without incident with the excepting of one time when I updated something. When this happened OS X would not boot until my buddy walked me though getting it back up. Now I think I did it again but my buddy is no longer available. Any suggestions? Mac OS X doesn’t even appear as a boot option anymore.
