Hollie Richmond asks:
I have a laptop with a Pentium 4 2.80 GHz 2.79 GHz processor. It has Windows XP 2002 Home and only 448 MB of RAM.
Is there any reason there would be a compatibility issue with adding more RAM? And if not, what type of RAM should I use for the laptop?

July 27, 2012Well, that depends. What brand and model is your laptop? I’m pretty sure you would be able to add at least up to 2 GB of RAM, but it all depends on the model. So does the type of RAM you would need.

July 27, 2012You would be better of telling us what make the laptop you have rather than the CPU.
We could then look it up and help you with how much Ram it can hold and use. I would think that it would defo hold more than it has, 448mb is a strange amount 512mb sounds right that’s half a GB. Post back and I will help you. A laptop uses Sodimm memory and seeing that you have XP installed it should be DDR Sodimm so post back the model.

July 27, 2012Without knowing either your motherboard model or computer model, we cannot be 100% sure on compatibility, but judging by your processor, the memory you should use is 200 pin pc-3200 (DDR 400) up to 1GB. Different memory types are not compatible since the number of pins are different, size of the module (2GB or higher) may not be read by the motherboard or bios, the speed of the memory is not compatible (too high or slow), etc. To make sure which kind of memory your computer uses, go to http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/ and see the memory type recommended. Go with the highest recommended to ensure you get the best speed you can out of the memory as it will give you better performance. If you get a memory module faster or slower than your other memory modules that are installed, the memory will clock down to the slowest speed memory module, giving you slower performance than you could actually get. The size difference doesn’t matter from one another, only the speed. If you would like to install the memory yourself, search for your computer model with the words service manual afterwards so you can have the instructions to take apart and put back together your computer. It is fairly simple to do, just make sure the memory is firmly pressed into place.

July 27, 2012You should find out the model and make of your laptop. Usually, the manufacturer’s site should have this. Then you would have to replace the RAM with the exact type you already have. Upgrading it can also help the computer to perform better.

July 27, 2012Open up your laptop, locate RAM & remove, then take RAM to local PC shop (independent as they are cheaper) for them to give you the correct RAM for your laptop. Take details of the laptop model for ease of identifying which RAM is required.
If you’re unsure howto access the RAM, google your laptop model ,where you should find links to opening up the laptop & replacing or upgrading parts.

July 28, 2012Make sure that the RAM you’ll be adding is the same with the existing, otherwise you might encounter problem in starting your computer.

July 28, 2012Dude, open up your laptop then take RAM to local PC shop for them to give you the correct RAM for your laptop. They sell in pairs so don’t be riled.
If you’re unsure how to access the RAM, use a screw driver and crack open the outer shell. It will take a little force so be prepared to strong arm the case.
Typically for laptops, the ram is accessed in a small door on the bottom side of the laptop. Sometimes the door is held in place by 1 or 2 screws, and sometimes the door has some type of a slide or latch release.
For laptops in the age range of your laptop I believe most of the time you will only have room for 1 ram module total… you will remove your current ram module and replace it with one that has more ram space.
Best thing to do is to take the whole laptop to a local PC shop and let them find what you need. If you don’t have a small PC shop in your area, a “Best Buy” or “Fry’s” should be able to get-r-done.

July 28, 2012Check the motherboard book (motherboard manual) to know the total capacity of RAM your system can handle.
if you don’t know your motherboard model, download cpu-z (from here http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html ) which will provide info about your cpu, mainboard, etc (it will show your mobo model) > then you can Google for a copy of motherboard manual. read it and choose the right RAM!!!
PS: and its easy – you can install it yourself..

July 31, 2012Install speccy to see what type of ram you have (ddr2,ddr3 so-dimm or else) ,then check your motherboard to see what maximum of ram GB is allowed on yoru pc,so you can then custom put in the specific number of GB per ram
