With my WordPress blog, how do I add the description that Google sees as a sub title, then paragraph.

    - I wouldn't use blog dates unless your posts are news items.

    - The blog name can be left in the title for branding purposes but not essential. During the first 2-3 years we had MakeUseOf appended to each title but not now.

    - It's always a good practice to name the images properly

Use an SEO plugin such as All-In-One SEO for finer control. Or, download my free ebook and check out the full section on SEO.

Also, bear in mind Google won't necessarily USE the description you set. It often changes it to be more relevant to the query, if it feels your own description doesn't accurately demonstrate what the user is searching for.

go to settings and change the tagline and save changes.

or try editing themes like jeff said.

tell me it worked or not.

You need to edit your theme. Read more on Meta Tags in WordPress here.
